| HEALTH HAZARD INFORMATION |
|
| Health Effects |
|
| Acute - Swallowed |
Irritant. Oral LD50 (rat) for White Spirit > 2000 mg/kg, which is considered by NOHSC not to be harmful. |
| Acute - Eye |
Mild eye irritant. White Spirit is practically non-irritating to the eyes. |
| Acute - Skin |
Mildly irritating to the skin. White Spirit is a slight to moderate skin irritant. Dermal LD50 (rat) for White Spirit > 2000 mg/kg, which is considered by NOHSC not to be harmful. |
| Acute - Inhaled |
The exposure standard for White Spirit is 790 mg/m³ (TWA) (Source: NOHSC). However, due to the form in which the product is supplied and under normal conditions of storage and use, this product does not present an inhalation hazard. |
Hazards Identification |
This product is NOT classified as hazardous due to its viscosity and phase stability at temperatures up to and including 40C. Hence, it does NOT require classification using the risk phrase R65. |
| Chronic |
Prolonged and constant contact may lead to irritation and possibly dermatitis. |
| Other Information |
The presence of white spirit in this product suggests the need for the Risk Phrase R65 (Harmful: May cause lung damage if swallowed) to be included on this MSDS. The severity of symptoms after ingestion of white spirit depends on whether it is aspirated into the lungs, as aspiration can cause serious bronchopneumonia. As this product is a viscous oil-in-water emulsion, the likelihood of aspiration of white spirit into the lungs is substantially reduced due to the product's form, viscosity and phase stability at temperatures up to 40C. |

Short Summary of Assessment of Environmental Impact |
White spirit would be expected to partition largely to the atmosphere; the less volatile constituents would partition to soil and sediment, where lowered bioavailability would reduce uptake by organisms. White spirit is readily biodegradable under aerobic conditions. Research indicates that White spirit has a moderate potential for bioaccumulation; however bioconcentration would be expected to be low. White spirit exhibits moderate toxicity to aquatic organisms. Most of the other major organic components of this product are expected to be readily biodegradable and to exhibit low aquatic toxicity, although one surfactant is recognised to have poor biodegradability. |
